About My Artwork...
Over the past few years I have found myself returning to my fine art background - integrating this with my experience of ceramics, and a continuing excitement at the wonderful and endless possibilities that clay offers. Despite frustrations in the making process, the discoveries made along the way shape and direct the finished work.
I look to the natural world for much of my inspiration, often finding there in its forms and themes metaphors through which to express my faith and explore my spiritual life.
The large stacking sculptures can be sighted outside with the central metal pole, through which the clay slabs are threaded, fixed permanently in the ground. Exposure to the elements then leave unique markings on each sculpture, as it becomes intergrated with its surroundings.
The smaller clay pieces often combine thrown and slab techniques with burnishing, smoke firing, and adding brass and copper sheets offering fantastic possibilities for a variety of textures. Some examples of my work and techniques can be seen in the Sculpting Techniques Bible.
I use charcoal, inks, oil paints and any unorthodox materials and tools I can find, often working directly in the landscape or from the figure. Sometimes the sketches are complete themselves, other times they provide a starting point for work in the studio as does music and found objects such as doors, windows and wood panels.
